Olympia was for the ancient Greeks, a place of peace and dignity. It is where the very first Olympic Games took place and since 1896, where the “Olympic Flame” is lit every 4 years and brought to the venue by the “torch-run”.
Located 19 km east of Pirgos, in the Peloponnese and surrounded by the hill Chronos and the rivers Alfios and Kladdeos, not only is Olympia a place of outmost historical importance, it’s also of outstanding natural beauty!
We pick you up at approx. 7.00 a.m. from one of our set pick-up points (depending on your resort) and bring you to the main port of the island in Zakynthos town. At 8.00 a.m. we take the ferry to Kyllini port, in the Peloponnese. From there it’s an hour drive to the village of Olympia. On the way you will hear interesting stories of the area!
Reaching the small picturesque village of Olympia, we head to the archaeological site and the museum, which is located less than 10 minute walk from there. Our local professional guide from Olympia will guide you through the archaeological site, the place where the ancient Greeks gathered to celebrate and worship their gods. A lot of ruins and columns of the temples of the Olympian gods have survived over thousands of years. The sight of this ancient Greek architecture will surely carry you off your feet!
The guide will then escort you to the new museum, where you can see the wonderful statues and ancient weapons and tools, which were found at the archaeological area.
After you’ve explored it all and you already feel like an ancient Greek, you have time for lunch and shopping in today´s village of Olympia. There you can buy souvenirs, local products of the Peloponnese, handmade jewellery, books etc.
We will leave Olympia at approx. 3.45 p.m. The ferryboat from Kyllini to Zakynthos departs at 5 p.m. and you will be back in your resort at approx. 7 p.m.
